Toronto-based defence and energy startup joins Canada's boldest innovators at Toronto Tech Week
Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) has been named a honouree in the 2026 edition of BetaKit Most Ambitious, spotlighting nearly 100 Canadian tech innovators recognized for strengthening the nation's autonomy, security, and prosperity. For a company building micro-nuclear power for Canada's Arctic, the recognition is more than an honour, it is a signal that Canada is taking its most critical infrastructure challenges seriously.
"There is no sovereignty without technology," said Jacqueline Loch, General Manager of BetaKit. BetaKit's recognition carries particular weight this year. "Discussions of sovereignty and economic resilience increasingly shape our national policy and industrial strategy," added Douglas Soltys, BetaKit Editor-in-Chief. "In such an environment, innovation becomes strategic infrastructure that will help determine Canada's global position. BetaKit Most Ambitious exists to tell the story of those Canadians rising to meet the moment."
At the heart of CSMC's mission is its LEUNR (Low Enriched Uranium Nuclear Reactor) microreactor, a compact, transportable nuclear energy system designed to provide reliable, low-emission power in remote and extreme environments. CSMC Nuclear draws on mature technologies to deliver fleets of micro-nuclear reactors as quickly, cost-efficiently and safely as possible, providing power solutions for Canadian defence, Indigenous communities, and space exploration.
The recognition comes during a period of significant momentum for the company. In April 2026, CSMC was selected as a project lead under NGen's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program to build manufacturing capacity for nuclear microreactors, with the federal government providing $1.2 million, representing 40 percent of a $3 million project, to advance a dedicated in-factory production cell for CSMC's microreactor systems. Partners on the project include Samuel Automation and Stern Laboratories, marking CSMC's third NGen-backed project. CSMC has also received a $5 million contract from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to partner with the University of Alberta on a $10 million collaborative project to commission an unfueled micro-modular reactor prototype and develop a detailed design package for a modernized research reactor. The company has further secured funding and contracts with globally strategic customers including the Department of National Defence, NATO, and the European Space Agency.
The first part of 2026 has been transformational for CSMC as it moves along the path to criticality. Canada needs sovereign capabilities to power and protect its future and secure its prosperity from the Arctic to the Moon. If BetaKit's recognition is any measure, Canada is starting to take notice.
