ERA Awards CSMC $5M to Advance Nuclear Innovation in Alberta

April 29th, 2026

Canadian Strategic Mission Corporation (CSMC) has been awarded $5 million from the Government of Alberta through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to support next-generation nuclear energy development in partnership with the University of Alberta. The funding forms part of a $10 million collaborative project aimed at strengthening Alberta's nuclear research capacity and advancing clean Canadian energy technologies.

The investment reflects growing momentum behind advanced nuclear systems as a cornerstone of emissions-free, sovereign energy solutions that support economic resilience, energy security, and long-term decarbonization.

Building a Modern Nuclear Research Capability

Through the project, CSMC and the University of Alberta will commission an unfueled micro-modular reactor (MMR) prototype to serve as a hands-on platform for stakeholders to engage with modern nuclear technologies. The prototype is designed to familiarize industry, regulators, and researchers with system performance, operational considerations, and risk management associated with advanced nuclear reactors.

The unfueled reactor will support technical capacity building, inform regulatory and licensing pathways, and generate the technical and operational requirements necessary to commission a future fueled research reactor at the University of Alberta.

The initiative will conclude with a detailed design package for a modernized research reactor and a state-of-the-art nuclear research facility, positioning Alberta as a national hub for advanced nuclear innovation. The prototype will also act as a critical testbed for small-scale nuclear technologies capable of delivering reliable, emissions-free power to remote communities, industrial users, and future defence and infrastructure applications.

A Foundation for Canada's Nuclear Future

CSMC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Alberta to collaborate across key research areas that strengthen Canada's ability to advance and deploy nuclear power. The partnership aims to accelerate innovation, deepen domestic expertise, and support the development of a resilient Canadian nuclear sector.

This project represents a key foundational block not only for CSMC, but for the broader nuclear energy ecosystem in Alberta. It demonstrates how the private sector can drive rapid innovation in close collaboration with government and academic institutions to deliver skilled labor, research excellence, and technological leadership.

"This initiative underscores Alberta's global leadership in responsible energy development and advanced technology," said Grant Hunter, Alberta's Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. "Investments like this support emissions-free power for decades to come, while strengthening our economic resilience and energy security."

CSMC views the project as a significant step toward delivering sovereign energy solutions that support Canada's defence, economic prosperity, and clean energy transition. The initiative could pave the way for the first new research reactor built in Canada in decades, marking a critical milestone in achieving both provincial and national nuclear ambitions.
