Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) has received a $4.5 million Government of Canada investment through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to advance a sovereign, Canadian-made energy solution for deployment in Canada’s Arctic.
The investment will accelerate the development of CSMC’s micro-nuclear reactor toward detailed design and a fuelled demonstration. This represents an important step in preparing the technology for Arctic deployment and strengthening Canada’s ability to meet its energy, defence, and security requirements with domestic capabilities.
Canada’s Arctic presents some of the world’s most demanding operating conditions. Remote locations, limited infrastructure, extreme temperatures, and long transportation routes create a need for resilient energy systems designed specifically for northern environments.
CSMC is developing its micro-nuclear technology to provide reliable and sustained power where conventional energy infrastructure may be difficult to establish or maintain. The system is intended to help meet Canada’s strategic energy and defence needs while strengthening the domestic technologies and industrial capabilities required to support long-term operations in the North.
The FedDev Ontario investment will help move the technology closer to operational readiness by supporting the next stages of research and development. The project will advance CSMC’s reactor toward a detailed design and fuelled demonstration, building on previous technical work and partnerships across Canada’s nuclear, manufacturing, and defence sectors.
The new investment adds to CSMC’s growing momentum in microreactor development.
In March 2026, CSMC announced a formal partnership with the Department of National Defence through the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security program to design, build, and demonstrate an unfuelled prototype of its Low Enriched Uranium Nuclear Reactor. That program focuses on instrumentation and controls, safety and monitoring functionality, and thermal-hydraulics experimentation.
CSMC is also leading a separate $3 million advanced-manufacturing project supported by NGen’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program. Working with Samuel Automation and Stern Laboratories, the initiative is advancing a dedicated manufacturing cell for in-factory production of CSMC microreactor systems. The federal contribution to that project is $1.2 million, representing 40 per cent of its total cost.
Together, these initiatives are helping CSMC progress from technology development and prototype validation toward repeatable manufacturing and future deployment.
The Government of Canada described the investment as part of a broader effort to reinforce Canada’s economic foundation, build the national defence industrial base, and advance critical technologies supporting defence and security capabilities. For CSMC, the project demonstrates how private-sector nuclear innovation can contribute to national resilience. Developing a sovereign micro-nuclear capability would give Canada greater control over a strategically important energy technology while supporting specialized skills, research, engineering, and advanced manufacturing activity.
The investment also reflects the role southern Ontario’s technology ecosystem can play in addressing challenges across the country. FedDev Ontario has supported economic diversification, innovation, productivity, business growth, and job creation in southern Ontario since 2009.
CSMC was founded in 2020 and develops mission-critical technologies at the intersection of energy, resources, and sovereignty. Through CSMC Nuclear and CSMC Labs, the company is advancing microreactor systems, energy resilience, and dual-use technologies for Canadian strategic missions on Earth and beyond.
This $4.5 million investment brings CSMC closer to delivering a reliable energy system designed for Canada’s most challenging environments. By progressing toward detailed design and a fuelled demonstration, CSMC is building the foundation for a sovereign capability that can strengthen Arctic operations, reinforce Canada’s defence readiness, and contribute to a more resilient national energy future.
