A Waterloo-based company is helping position Canada at the forefront of two of the world's most ambitious infrastructure challenges: providing reliable power in the Arctic and enabling a sustained human presence on the Moon.

Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) is advancing the development of its Low Enriched Uranium Nuclear Reactor (LEUNR), a compact micro-nuclear energy system designed to operate in some of the most remote and demanding environments on Earth and beyond. The technology reflects a growing recognition that future energy security, Arctic sovereignty, and lunar exploration will require resilient power solutions that can function where conventional infrastructure cannot.

The company's work highlights how Canadian innovation can address critical national priorities while simultaneously contributing to the next generation of international space exploration.

Powering Strategic Missions

Across Canada's North, many communities, industrial projects, and defence installations continue to depend on diesel fuel that must be transported over vast distances. Reliable, locally deployable energy systems are increasingly recognized as essential to supporting economic development, improving resilience, and strengthening Canada's Arctic presence.

CSMC's LEUNR microreactor is being designed as a transportable, scalable energy platform capable of delivering continuous clean power in remote locations. Unlike conventional large-scale nuclear facilities, microreactors are intended to be manufactured in controlled factory environments and deployed where energy demand exists, reducing logistical complexity and enabling greater flexibility.

The technology has attracted growing support from government, industry, and defence organizations interested in strengthening Canada's sovereign energy capabilities and reducing reliance on imported fuels in strategically important regions.

A Made-in-Canada Lunar Power Solution

Beyond its terrestrial applications, LEUNR is also being developed with future lunar missions in mind. In 2025, the Canadian Space Agency supported CSMC's work on a compact nuclear reactor concept intended to help power a permanent human presence on the Moon. As international partners advance plans for lunar bases through initiatives such as NASA's Artemis program, reliable surface power is increasingly viewed as one of the most important enabling technologies for long-duration operations.

Future lunar habitats, scientific facilities, communications systems, resource extraction operations, and transportation networks will all require dependable energy that can operate through extended lunar nights and extreme environmental conditions. Nuclear power systems are widely considered among the most promising solutions to meet those demands.

CSMC's approach reflects a dual-use philosophy: technologies developed to meet Canada's remote energy needs today may also help support humanity's future expansion beyond Earth.

Building Strategic Industrial Capacity

As demand for advanced nuclear technologies grows, CSMC is also investing in the manufacturing capabilities needed to bring microreactor systems into production. In 2026, the company was selected to lead a government-supported project focused on building advanced manufacturing capacity for nuclear microreactors. Working with Canadian industry partners, the initiative aims to establish specialized production capabilities that can accelerate deployment while strengthening Canada's domestic nuclear supply chain.

The effort complements additional investments supporting reactor development, demonstration activities, and Arctic deployment readiness, reinforcing Canada's position in a rapidly expanding global market for advanced energy technologies.

A Foundation for Canada's Future

The challenges of Arctic sovereignty, energy resilience, and deep-space exploration may appear distinct, but they share a common requirement: dependable infrastructure capable of operating in extreme environments.

Through the development of micro-nuclear reactor technology, Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation is helping build that foundation. Whether supporting communities and defence operations in Canada's North or enabling future lunar infrastructure, the company's work demonstrates how Canadian innovation can contribute to both national priorities and global exploration efforts.

As investment and momentum continue to grow across the advanced nuclear sector, CSMC's mission remains clear: develop strategic technologies that strengthen Canada's sovereignty, expand industrial capability, and help power the future from the Arctic to the Moon.
